CNR-ICCOM has been awarded and coordinates the European research project “Formate for Renewable Energy Storage” (FRESH), funded by the European Commission under Horizon Europe through the European Executive Agency for Climate, Infrastructure and Environment (CINEA). The project is coordinated by Dr. Hamish A. Miller, researcher at ICCOM Sesto Fiorentino site.

The project, lasting three years and with an economic endowment of 2.6 M €, involves the development, construction and validation of an electrocatalytic process powered by electricity obtained from renewable sources, for the valorization of CO2 to potassium formate. The high stability of this product guarantees safe storage and subsequent on-demand conversion into electricity through the use of direct fuel cells.

The planned activities (Work Packages) include the capture and purification of CO2 , the conversion of CO2 to formate, the conversion of formate to electricity and the construction and validation of an integrated prototype at TRL 4. The consortium is made up of seven partners: three research centers – including CNR-ICCOM, Forschungszentrum Julich GMBH (Germany), and Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (Denmark); four industrial partners (COVAL ENERGY BV, ENGIE laboelec., HYSYTECH srl, EEMPOWER BV) of five European countries.
