SCRIBA
Titolo: Crystals against biodeteriogens in libraries and archives.
ICCOM Principal Investigator: Andrea Ienco.
Project type: Tuscany Region.
Durata: 01/01/2025 – 31/03/2026.
Abstract: Co-crystals are crystalline structures composed of two or more neutral organic molecules that interact through weak intermolecular forces. The project focuses on co-crystals based on terpenes, natural compounds present in essential oils, and on their ability to gradually release the active principle. The project aims to define and optimize operational protocols for the use of co#crystals in the protection of paper materials. In particular, these protocols will include: (i) preventive control of the development of mold and insect infestation in non-optimal environmental conditions; (ii) control and slowing down of ongoing infections; (iii) prevention of post-flood infections, through the treatment of wet material before freezing and after the freeze-drying process. The final objective of the project is to provide conservators with innovative and effective tools for the protection of paper heritage against biodeterioration, while ensuring the safety and integrity of the treated material.
