The 16th edition of the European Meeting on Ancient Ceramics (EMAC2023) took place in Pisa from 14 to 16 June 2023, in the Aula Magna of the Polo Piagge (Via Giacomo Matteotti, 11). The European Meeting on Ancient Ceramics (EMAC) is a biennial conference that brings together scholars and young researchers with different humanistic and scientific academic backgrounds. The conference was an opportunity to promote interdisciplinary and integrated studies on ancient ceramics, covering various aspects ranging from production, diffusion and use to post-depositional alteration and conservation. Methodological developments, new approaches and scientific advances in the sector were presented during the three study days which saw the participation of around 150 delegates from various European and non-European countries.
The conference was organized by ICCOM-CNR Pisa (National Research Council, Institute of Chemistry of OrganoMetallic Compounds), in collaboration with the Departments of Civilization and Form of Knowledge and of Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry of the University of Pisa.

This year, for the first time the EMAC conference was introduced by EMAC School, a 2-day international school aimed at students, PhD students and young researchers, entitled “CERAMIC MATTERS – Investigating and rendering the materiality of Archaeological Ceramics through Portable Methods ”. The school provided students with an advanced training opportunity in portable / non-destructive / non-invasive methods for the study of archaeological pottery, and included both theory sessions and hands-on workshops during which students had the opportunity to use mobile/laptops and learn methods for data processing.
The EMAC School was held in the Church of S. Paolo all’Orto, which houses the university collections of the GIARA – Gipsoteca di Arte Antica and Antiquarium (Piazza S. Paolo All’Orto, 20). The 16th edition of the EMAC Conference and the 1st edition of the EMAC School were supported by the Italian Society of Mineralogy and Petrography (SIMP).
