Title: From essential to solid: immobilization of terpenes in solid state for the control and inhibition of weeds on paper.

ICCOM Principal Investigator: Andrea Ienco.

Project Type: National.

Duration: 01/09/2020 – 31/08/2022.

Abstract: Terpenes are the main components of essential oils and resins, very complex natural mixtures produced by conifers and aromatic plants. The biocidal and antibacterial properties of these molecules are known from ancient times. Terpenes are low-boiling liquids or solids and they have high volatility. This limits their use. Methods to immobilize terpenes within a solid have recently been developed. The advantage is to allow a gradual and constant release over time of the active components. New perspectives open for the application of these products on paper in the treatment of the attached material and in the prevention of attacks by potential weeds. The project will develop strategies for the immobilization of volatile compounds and study their release kinetics, the biocidal action in vitro and in controlled environments, evaluating the absence of alterations on the materials.
