Title: High pressure photoreduction of CO2 inside inorganic and metal organic porous materials.

ICCOM Principal Investigator: Matteo Ceppatelli, Samuele Fanetti, Demetrio Scelta.

Project type: National.

Duration: 30/11/2023 – 29/11/2025.

Abstract: This project deals with alternative solutions for the transformation of CO2 into valuable chemicals and fuels. The reduction of CO2 is a fundamental step for its removal from the atmosphere or from the emissions of exhaust gases, while producing appealing energetic materials. In this project we will explore the photoreduction of CO2 under high pressure confinement in porous matrices, like inorganic zeolites and metal organic frameworks, which have been already proposed and tested for photoreduction in absence of compression. The combination of confinement in porous materials and high pressure is expected to improve the reaction yields, making low-cost catalysts more efficient for photoreduction. X-ray diffraction and optical spectroscopy will be used to investigate selected materials compressed in the 0.1-10 GPa regime with simultaneous visible and UV  irradiation. Zeolites and MOFs will be selected by theoretical DFT calculations. If successful, this procedure will open new research opportunities and, upon a proof of concept, be suitable for large scale applications.
