Title: MAGnetic Inductive heating of nano-CATalyst onto metal foam as innovative approach for selective aerobic alcohol and polyol oxidation.

ICCOM Principal Investigator: Claudio Sangregorio.

Project Type: National.

Duration: 28/09/2023 – 27/09/2025.

Abstract: MAGICAT goal aims at developing a new approach for the catalysis of aerobic alcohol and polyol oxidation by magnetic induction heating under the application of an alternating magnetic field, using a recyclable nanostructured metal-based catalyst supported onto a magnetic foam. High activity and selectivity, recyclability, and stability under harsh reaction conditions will be the target catalyst properties pursued through this project. We propose the use of a magnetic foam acting both as support for metal nanocatalysts and a heat transducer to activate the catalytic reaction. Using the latter a higher temperature can be reached at lower magnetic field amplitudes compared to magnetic nanoparticles, thus decreasing the total energy cost of the process. Moreover, macroporous foams represent simple, low cost, flexible supports which allow performing catalytic reactions with extremely low pressure (under flow conditions) opening new perspectives for a rapid laboratory to industrial level scale-up.
