Title: Lactic Acid Based new green Solvents: design, synthesis and use in catalysis.

Abstract: Solvents constitute around 80% of the total volume of chemicals used in a process and contribute significantly to its environmental impact and hazard profile. Efforts are currently aimed at replacing traditional solvents by more benign counterparts, taking into consideration aspects like their renewable origin, availability, synthetic convenience, fields of application, biodegradability and environmental impact. In this emerging area of research, a few innovative solvents have recently been proposed. Core of the project will be design, sustainable synthesis and application in fine-chemical organometallic catalysis of new green solvents. The raw material will be lactic acid, available from waste biomass or from industrial processes already included in the circular economy. Computational studies will be aimed at understanding and optimizing the acid catalysis.The project will contribute to a greener production and to realize the ambitious zero-waste goal of the circular economy.
