Title: Solar driven chemistry: new materials for photo- and electro-catalysis
ICCOM Principal Investigator: Giuliano Giambastiani
Project Type: National
Duration: 05/02/2017-04/02/2020
Abstract: Solar-driven chemistry is a new scenario for the substitution of fossil fuels as source of energy and raw materials. Progresses in this area are critical to move to a sustainable (low-carbon) future and maintain competitiveness of research and chemical production in Italy. However, 43 years after the first experiment of photoelectrochemical water splitting, commercial production of hydrogen and solar fuels by this method is still a dream. To achieve a high efficiency in water splitting and/or CO2 reduction, semiconductors with superior electronic properties as well as catalysts with improved efficiency are required. Our project addresses this challenging topic, by developing new catalytic materials for the production of fossil-free solar fuels and chemicals via photo- or electro-catalysis
