As part of the agreement between the Galileo Museum and CNR-ICCOM, the event “Flying magnets, a journey between literature and science” will be presented on Saturday 17 December 2022 from 11.00 am. The laboratory is a part of the Museo Galileo events named “DALLA CONOSCENZA ALLA PRATICA SCIENTIFICA – percorsi laboratoriali sul saper fare” (from knowledge to scientific practice – workshop courses on know-how). Inspired by the flying island of Laputa in Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, which rises and falls thanks to a huge magnet, the basic principles of magnetism up to modern magnetic levitation technologies will be explained with funny experiments. Special attention will be paid to the current utility of Rare Earth magnets and recycling activities to lower the environmental and economic impact due to the use of these materials.
