CNR-NRF Bilateral Project
Title: Dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical cells for sustainable artificial photosynthetic processes.
ICCOM Principal Investigator: Lorenzo Zani.
Project Type: International.
Duration: 01/01/2022 – 31/12/2023.
Abstract: This project intends to establish a collaboration between two research groups, one located in Italy and the other in the Republic of Korea, with the aim to develop new compounds and materials combinations to be applied in dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical cells (DS-PECs) for solar fuels production. On the cathodic end, the reactions studied will be the visible-light driven hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) from water and the conversion of CO2 to useful fuels and building blocks. Such processes will be coupled with the water oxidation reaction (WOR) at the photoanode, which will be used to regenerate the dye sensitizer, possibly with the help of a suitable catalyst. In addition, we will also assess the coupling of the HER with the reforming of renewable alcohols or biomass-derived feedstocks at the photoanode, with the goal of improving the light-to-fuel efficiency of the process.
