Title: Biohydrogen and biomethane production from co-digestion of organic fraction of municipal solid waste and sewage sludge, production of renewable energy and fertilizers for the improvement of public utility facilities

ICCOM Principal Investigators: Lorenzo Ferrari, Francesco Vizza

Project Type: National – Tuscany Region

Duration: 09/2016-03/2019

Abstract: Bio2Energy project is intended to increase the production of renewable energy in Tuscany through the production of biofuel from organic waste. The increase in renewable energy is realized by means of biohydrogen and biogas production from the co-digestion of Organic Fraction Municipal Solid Waste (OFMSW) and sewage sludge. This synergy goes with the production of renewable fertilizers (bioproducts) since the digestate is a process output rich in carbon, nitrogen and nutrients which can substitute conventional chemical fertilizers. The biofuel production will take place in the wastewater treatment plant of Viareggio (Lucca, Italy) managed by SEA RISORSE S.pA. with the intent to revamp the present sludge treatment with an anaerobic co-digestion process of sewage sludge and OFMSW. Under this respect, the project will follow the best available techniques (BAT) for the optimization of the process, the control of energy consumptions and the reduction of costs.
