Title: Sterilization of air conditioning systems by means of microwave-assisted UVC generation.

ICCOM Principal Investigator: Emilia Bramanti.

Project type: National.

Duration: 01/06/2021 – 31/12/2021.

Abstract: AirSterizUv proposes the use of an innovative technology to produce UVC radiation, based on electrodeless lamps (EDL) excited by microwave radiation (MW) inside the air pipes of conditioning systems of buildings open to the public. In the AirSterizUv project, the amount of ozone and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced following UV irradiation of a model duct was evaluated. A second goal of the project was the identification and characterization of catalytic filters (based on activated carbon or other materials or composites) to break down ozone and VOCs at the exit of the prototype. The goal is a TRL4 level prototype and the safety assessment of the prototype in terms of the production of harmful by-products (MW parasitic radiation, production of ozone and VOCs).
