Title: Solid State NMR and mechanochemistry: a powerful synergy to investigate dynamics in Hybrid Perovskites.

ICCOM Principal Investigator: Elisa Carignani.

Project type: International.

Duratio: 01/01/2025 – 31/12/2026.

Abstract: Metal Halide Perovskites (MHP), with general formula ABX3, where A is a monovalent cation, typically methylammonium, formamidinium or Cs+, B is a divalent metal (most commonly Pb2+ or Sn2+) and X is a halogen anion, have a peculiar crystal structure in which the B cation is octahedrally coordinated to six X-site anions, and the A cation is located within the cubooctahedral cavities of the [BX6]4- inorganic sublattice. First synthetized in the late 70’ of the last century, Hybrid Perovskites, in which the A cation is organic, sparked an exponentially growing interest since their first use in a new type of a solar cell in 2009. Besides their excellent performance as photovoltaic materials (power conversion efficiencies at present exceeding 25%), MHPs have also gained prominence in other optoelectronic applications, including light-emitting devices and photodetectors, lasers, ionizing radiation detection, and water splitting. This project aims to develop new and improved protocols for the study of the dynamic properties of organic cations in MHPs, by combining highly efficient synthetic strategies (mechanosynthesis) and state-of-the-art SSNMR spectroscopic and relaxometric methods adapted to this class of materials.
