Title: Laser-based continuous monitoring and resolution of steel grades in sequence casting machines

Abstract: On-line elemental analysis of hot, transition slabs/billets from a distance, without any interference or delay in the production line, will be performed with a new sensing system based on laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Intermediate chemical composition in transition materials resulting from successive heats will be then readily identified. A number of laboratory tests and industrial trials will be carried out to validate the LIBS technology. The sensor is aimed at working in plant environment in absence of human intervention. A mathematical model based on LIBS measurements to predict the mixing process will be also developed.
